Zones are the way the system separates your home or business into different areas. Door contacts, window contacts and motions should be separated on different zones so you know where an alarm is coming from. Most systems start with 6-8 zones and some are expandable, usually in 8 zone increments. If you're planning on expanding your system in the future, be sure when purchasing a system that it has the zone expansion capabilities.
